La Marinière: A French Icon

May 16, 2025

La marinère was originally developed in 1858 as standard issue for the French Navy. The high contrast stripes were designed to easily spot sailors that have fallen overboard.

The military issued shirt eventually made its way to civilian closets, quickly becoming an iconic wardrobe staple. Although it may seem like a bold pattern, the navy or burgundy stripes on an ecru base can complement a wide range of outfits.

Our Marinière took inspiration from the icons who have forever linked the stripes to embody culture, style, and a relaxed elegance. Our pattern is a custom rib knit made from 100% GOTS certified organic cotton with a relaxed fit and boat neck collar, a nod to the nautical history. Each piece is cut and finished by a skilled team with generational savoir-faire.

Made with love to last a lifetime, our Marinière will soften and conform to you with each wear making it uniquely yours over time. Shop our Marinère in Navy below.
