In Conversation With Aissatou

Aissatou is a content creator, creative, athlete, vintage clothing aficionado and all round cool-girl with incredible personal style. Aissatou is currently studying abroad in the U.K and we were lucky enough to meet with her in Paris this spring and learn more about what inspires her and her favorite wardrobe pieces.

What is one item in your wardrobe you cherish the most and what makes it special to you?

I have this one Levi’s denim jacket I bought in Paris when I was thirteen. Owning this piece has really made me reflect on my spending habits. There are very few items in my closet that have actually been life changing. It has made me realize the importance of longevity in your closet. This is one of the only things I would wear without thinking twice about. It’s light enough to wear in warm weather,  and perfect for layering in fall/ winter. It’s even water resistant and fits me perfectly. Apart from the sentimental value, it has also just reinforced being patient to find what you want when thrifting. You’ll find your dream piece eventually, so make sure your criteria is set so you don’t get distracted and collect pieces you won’t wear.

Can you tell us about the last book or movie that has left a lasting impression on you?

I would say White Nights by Fydor Dostoyevsky. I read it back in January on an evening flight to Berlin. Once I sat down, there was a couple sitting next to me in the row, and we were all reading a book (this made me smile). We briefly spoke, laughed, and got into our reading. This was in contrast to the chaotic noise surrounding us during the flight haha. While I was not fully immersed in the book, it was pleasant, and an easy read that brought about a comforting touch, through a story about love and yearning.

Where do you draw inspiration from and how does it show up in your creative outlets?

I draw inspiration from everything around me. For me it often shows up in the projects I undertake, or the content I post on TikTok. I often fall into a rabbit hole of discoveries whenever I read an interview from those I admire. Grace Wales Bonner is a great example of someone I have grown to admire over the years who has distinct interests I have taken a closer look into, that are now key aspects of who I am and who I’m becoming.

What is a personal style philosophy you follow that you feel will stay with you forever?

I believe it is good to embrace the nonsense that sometimes comes with getting dressed. We all have our own internal logic, and understanding of what makes sense to us, and when we stray away from that deep knowing, things can get confusing. Embracing your preferences, and establishing trust within yourself to move towards the things that you are most drawn to has made getting dressed easier for me.

What makes a wardrobe item or accessory timeless to you?

I really love built-in versatility in things I own. I find pieces that come with different features that allow you to explore how you choose to style it in various ways are the best. Apart from that, I think simplicity with a twist always wins for me. A simple tank top with an interesting detail will instantly serve its intended purpose, all while elevating an outfit simultaneously.
