There's no better way to get inspired than to speak with inspiring people. For the first instalment of our portrait series, we spent an afternoon chatting with Miranda Chan. Miranda is a dancer, artist, and movement director based in Paris. We took a stroll near Jardin du Palais-Royal this spring to learn about her style philosophy and finding inspiration in the mundane.

Tell us about the last book or movie that has left a lasting impression on you?
Being a dancer and all, of course the musical film Wicked by Jon M. Chu left an impression on me. I think films where you can draw parallels with the current society can be quite powerful and surprisingly empowering when the protagonist is someone who rebels against the status quo. I found themes in this movie that I could relate to, from “being different” growing up as a minority, to seeing how education and history is different depending on who’s perspective it is taught from, the importance to question things we were taught, the importance of fighting for the justice we believe in and finding the courage to do that.

Where do you draw inspiration from and how does it show up in your creative outlets?
I draw inspiration from the moments shared with my close friends and from the life around me. I am very passionate and I like to romanticize mundane things and life in general and I find that helps keep my spirit open to the inspiration around me. I am also extremely visual as a person, so I often become inspired by images I have seen or lived.
Where do you like to go to escape?
Into nature, anywhere with fresh air and the sea/ lake. Everything makes more sense in nature, while society also makes less sense. The world becomes quieter and it is the moment where I get to disconnect to better connect. Being from Quebec, Canada, of course I think about the Quebec countryside that I often escaped to.
What is a personal style philosophy you follow that you feel will stay with you forever?
It is about how you wear something more than what you wear. I feel our energy always speaks louder than our wardrobe.
Miranda is wearing our Navy Marinière in size S.
